One of the highlights of our experience in the Study was the 50-year anniversary of
the Study celebrated in 1998 when all Study members were invited to Winnipeg.
At first, we were concerned that since we could not afford to pay the transportation
and lodging expenses of the members, the response would be limited. To our delight,
approximately 200 members and spouses attended.
We had generous support from the Dean of Medicine and Province of Manitoba.
Certain pharmaceutical companies and many members sent specific donations to help
fund this event.
The meeting started off with a presentation of the history of the Study and the
publications somewhat as recorded in this text. Following a luncheon, at which we
were addressed by the Minister of Health of the Province of Manitoba, tours of the
Western Canadian Aviation Museum and of 17 Wing Headquarters were organized for the
afternoon.
Transportation in double-decker buses was quite successful and those members able to
attend seemed to have a great time. We were delighted that the CBC chose to film
the day's activities and showed it (many times) on their nationally broadcast program
"The Health Show". It is difficult to know who enjoyed the event more, the members
or the staff.
