Since 1948, the Manitoba Follow-up Study has been housed at the University of Manitoba
Medical College. The University has contributed the space including light and heat for
this long-term Study. The importance of this continued support cannot be over-stated.
Early after the War, the Medical College was designated as a Cardiovascular Research Unit
of the Royal Canadian Air Force, with Dr. Mathewson serving as the Commanding Officer.
A medical technologist was assigned to this Cardiovascular Research Unit. He was
involved in testing pilots including complete physical examinations and electrocardiograms.
As well there was a high altitude low pressure chamber where pilots could be tested for
their tolerance of altitude and hypoxia.
This facility also provided training for medical technicians from all three armed forces in
a variety of skills including medical examination, blood pressure measurement, performance
of an electrocardiogram, and taking routine x-rays. The medical technologist was responsible
for assembling, filing and tracking medical information pertaining to the subjects of the
Manitoba Follow-up Study as well.
